19^th, 20^th, 21^st century

1836. Filekpaideftiki Etaireia is founded. Its objective is “the development of Primary Schools and the fundamental education of the Nation”. Prime mover of this vision was Ioannis Kokkonis, an eminent teacher and tutor. George Gennadios from Epirus, teacher and scholar, followed Kokkonis’ vision as well as the first Archibishop of Athens Michail Apostolidis. They were supported by 70 eminent people, who fought for the liberation of Greece as well as scholars, politicians and diplomats. It is noticeable that the first three chairmen of the Board of Directors, Georgios Kountouriotis, Andreas Metaxas and Alexandros Mavrokordatos, were honoured with the supreme office as Presidents of the Government.

1837. The first “School for Young Girls” is founded. An initiative so important at a time when girls had as a sole interest the family. The school was housed in rental buildings and was organized in two levels: a) the Lower School for girls 6-14 years old, so that to be taught free of charge subjects and handicrafts of the Primary School and b) the Upper School where the graduates were awarded the Certificate for Teachers after taking a written exam by the National Committee of the State Teacher Board.

1840. The Board of Directors decide the foundation of the Pre-Primary School, legalized by the Greek Government in 1895.

1842. Filekpaideftiki Etaireia buys a building site of 15.600 acres in a residential block orientated by Stadiu, Menandrou(Pezmatzoglou), Panepistimiou, Typographias(Arsaki) Streets, to house the Schools in privately owned buildings.

1846. The foundation of the main building designed by the prominent architect of the time Lyssandros Kaftatzoglou, came true thanks to the donations of the Filekpaideftiki Etaireia members, the contributions and the funds conducted in Greece and abroad.

1847. Filekpaideftiki Etaireia establishes a certificate for the primary school teachers, who graduate from its schools.

1850. Apostolos Arsakis, a doctor of medicine, scholar and politician who comes from Epirus, makes a major donation for the completion of the main building. The board of Directors of Filekpaideftiki Etaireia nominates him Great Benefactor of Filekpaideftiki Etaireia and names the schools ARSAKEIA.

1852. The main building of Arsakeia Schools is inaugurated. The Lower, the Upper and the Mutual Teaching Schools and the Pre-Primary Schools are housed in this building. Eminent, qualified teachers assumed responsibility to teach in these schools.

1858. Physical Education is introduced in the schools.

1861. The “Arsakeio Higher School” was nominated Teacher Training Academy, equivalent to the State Academies. The graduates assume responsibility to teach in schools even in the most remote areas of the great Greek Nation.

1862. Foundation of the Library.

1867. -The recently-constructed school building, donated by Michail and Helen Tositsas and designed by Lyssandros Kaftatzoglou, houses the Tositseio Mutual Teaching School of the Foundation.

-The need to boost the Greek language both in remote municipalities of Attika and other regions throughout Greece led to the establishment of more schools (Menidi, Kifissia, Kiourka, Gantio Androu, Patissia, Elefsina, Hassia, Avia Manis, Stira Evias).

1868. Foundation of the Arsakeio of Kerkyra.

1871. Foundation of the Primary School for needy children.

1880. The status of the supervisor is established in the schools of Filekpaideftiki Etaireia.

1885. The suggested school curriculum by Filekpaideftiki Etaireia is totally accepted by the Greek Ministry of Education and is embraced by all the Girls’ Schools of the country, acknowledging the precedence of Filekpaideftiki Etaireia in the women’s education.

1891. -Foundation of the Arsakeio School in Patras. The Municipality of Patras undertakes the responsibility to construct a building in Maizonos street to house the Arsakeio School.

-The Union of the Graduates of Filakpaideftiki Etaireia, the First Feminine Society in Greece (SAFE), is established.

1936. Foundation of the Teachers’ Training Academy at Arsakeio Psychikou.

1837. -The building where the 3^rd Arsakeio Primary School is situated today is founded by the donation of the SAFE to house initially the Institution of Pupils Welfare and, later on, the Boarding place of the Teacher Training Academy.

-Foundation of the Teacher Training Academy in the Arsakeio School in Patras.

-Inauguration of the Tositseio School in Soumerli and Aharnon Streets.

1939. Foundation of a three-year attendance Arsakeio Home Economics School in Thessaloniki.

1940-1945. -The School buildings of Filekpaideftiki Etaireia in Athens and Patras are requisitioned during the Second World War.

-The Schools continue their operation in rental buildings and in the main buildings in Athens.

1947. A Professional, a Boarding School and a Home Economics School are founded in Rhodes.

1955. The Primary School of Psychiko came into operation. The construction of the building and the educational process are based on the Swiss model.

1958. The historical residence of Prime Minister A.Michalakopoulos, situated in Kokkoni Street, is bought by Filekpaideftiki Etaireia. Initially, it was used to house the Boarding school and later on as the Head Offices.

1969-1972.The complex where the eight Tositseia Schools of Ekali are housed is erected, according to the most modern demands for school buildings.

1973. The buildings of Arsakeia Schools in Thessaloniki, situated at Elaiones Pylais, are inaugurated.

1980. The Schools set together boys and girls as pupils, an action which is completed in 1987

1988. -Counseling Psychological Services are established.

-The afternoon classes come into operation.

1989. Foundation of the archives of Filekpaideftiki Etaireia so all the historical documents concerning the Schools be classified, recorded and maintained.

1991. -Commencement of a programme between Filekpaideftiki Etaireia and the Theatre of Art-Karolos Koun to introduce theatrical education at the schools.

-Establishment of the Panhellenic Pupils’ Theatre Contest.

1996. Inauguration of the Book Arcade in the Arsakeio Megaron. A cultural centre in which educational programmes and cultural events take place.

1998. Inauguration of the Arsakeio Greek- Albanian College of Tirana.

2000. Organization of the Annual Panhellenic Rhetorical Contest.

2004. -Inauguration of the privately -owned building of Arsakeio in Patras located in Platani municipality of Rio.

-Establishment of the Pre-Primary and the Middle School in the Arsakeio Greek-Albanian College of Tirana.

-Inauguration of the indoor Gymnasium of Olympic standards in the Arsakeio School of Thessaloniki.

-Institution of the Arsakeio in Ioannina, located in the area of Loggades.

-Announcement of the Foundation of the Arsakeio School in Cyprus.

2007. -Establishment of the institution of the “Open university” in the Book Arcade.

-Inauguration of the newly-constructed privately-owned building in the Arsakeio Greek-Albanian College in Tirana.

-Announcement of the Foundation of the Arsakeio School in Thrace.

2008. -Establishment of the Arsakeia Schools Scholarships.

-The erection of the complex of the Arsakeio in Ioannina is completed and it is expected to start its operation as Pre-Primary and Primary School at the beginning of the school year 2009-2010.

2009. -The Arsakeio in Ioannina commences its operation (Pre-Primary and Primary Schools).

-Inauguration of the new modern athletic track in the Arsakeia Schools in Psychiko with the donation of the Alexandros Onasis Foundation.

-Inauguration of the Centre of Science in the Arsakeio School in Patras.

-The athletics track is topped out. It was constructed by the sponsoring of the Alexandros Onassis Foundation

-The House of Science is topped out at the Arsakeio School of Patras.
